How to choose the right bento box
The right box makes packing easier and keeps food looking good until lunch. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing one, whether it's for you or for a child.
Pick the size first
A traditional rule of thumb is that a box's capacity in milliliters roughly matches the calories it holds when packed the standard way. So a 600 ml box is about right for a typical adult lunch, 400 to 500 ml for a light eater or older child, and 300 to 400 ml for a young child. Read more about portions in how to pack a bento.
Compare materials
- Plastic (BPA-free): Light, cheap and often microwave-safe. Look for a tight silicone seal. Can stain with tomato or curry.
- Stainless steel: Very durable, doesn't stain or hold smells, and is easy to keep clean. Not microwave-safe, and usually not fully leakproof.
- Wood (magewappa): The traditional Japanese box, made from bent cedar or cypress. The wood absorbs excess moisture so rice stays fluffy. Hand-wash only and more expensive.
- Glass: Great for reheating and meal prep, but heavy and breakable, so less ideal for kids.
Features worth paying for
- Leakproof seal: Essential if you pack sauces, fruit or anything juicy. Check whether each compartment seals or only the outer lid.
- Removable dividers: Let you change the layout for different meals.
- Dishwasher-safe parts: A big time saver if you pack lunch every day.
- Easy-open latches: Important for young kids, who need to open the box on their own.
- Insulated bag: Most bento boxes aren't insulated, so pair yours with a small cooler bag and an ice pack.
One tier or two?
A single-tier box with compartments is simpler and fits more bags. Two-tier boxes let you keep rice and wet dishes separate, and you can leave one tier at home on lighter days. Many adults find a two-tier box of 600 to 900 ml total the most flexible.
Caring for your box
Wash it the same day, and let the silicone seal and lid dry completely before closing them; trapped moisture causes smells and mold. Replace seals when they crack or stop fitting snugly.
